Reminds me of Valkyria Chronicles, the PS3 tactical RPG. Their art style is very near-illustration quality. Looking at character bios, I was surprised that the portraits were in fact polygonal models that could be scaled and rotated.

Pretty good game to boot, too.

You might enjoy the interactive fiction work Galatea: http://www.wurb.com/if/game/1326

Although this is something that isn't made clear at first, I'll spoil it since it's the part it sounds like you'd find most interesting: the setting is an art gallery, and the medium of art being displayed are essentially androids that are meant to look and speak as humanly as possible. The "game" consists almost entirely of talking to and interacting with one of these "living statues". (Or is she?)

I spent some time playing with this game a couple of weeks ago, it's amazingly deep.

Yeah, these things are cool. XYZ RGB (a super high-res scanning company in Montreal) developed that tech, and Rabbit Holes bought it from them. It's basically 1800 frames of horizontal data printed into a hologram. Relies on a correctly installed light above the frame, and is currently limited to horizontal movement only.

When XYZ RGB did it they charged ~$200 per square foot, plus the $2-3k setup costs that Rabbit Holes is charging... a bit out of my price range :(

"I really want to see “paintings” like this done in a fantasy RPG; couple with a conversation system would be even better."

I'm trying to picture this, and I can't quite grasp what you're saying. Are you talking about a real life RPG that uses this technology to create conversations with the player? That would be cool, although very restricted as of yet.
